Still wondering why your parent’s tell you to get “a good nights sleep”? I’ve found out some important reasons why… From the time we are born to the time we will die we spend about one third of our whole life sleeping. So if you live to 90 for example you will spend around 30 years of that asleep!
Every year more and more New Zealander's suffer from loss of sleep. They struggle through working hours every day. Then go home after the day is done, and promise themselves every single night that they will get a “good nights sleep”. When they don’t it keeps on getting worse and worse.
When it gets extreme it is what is called “FFI”, fatal familial insomnia the inability to sleep. FFI is always fatal and is at the extreme end of not getting enough sleep. So lets start from just not getting a good night sleep first.
As some say, “Sleep is one of the precious gifts of god”. A good night sleep makes you fit and cheerful after you wake up from it. For your benefit, the right foods and especially surprisingly a good sleep are very important to our well-being. Sleep makes your tired body not only cheerful, but also healthy. Sometimes going to bed early when you are tired is a good idea, even if you don’t want to. The pupils are constricted and eyes are rolled upwards. And your body goes into relaxed mode.
A proper sleep is necessary for good eye sight (vision). And having a proper mattress and pillow will help you have more of a chance of a better sleep. A good night sleep strengthens the presence of your mind, consciousness and body. It makes you feel energized, relaxed and maybe more alert. Sleep makes your memory and learning capacity better and sometimes at it’s full potential. Getting a good sleep will help you remember and process things you’ve learnt!
Good sleep strengthens your immune system and makes you less likely to get sick. And a good night sleep helps you to lose weight… Good night sleep keeps your heart healthy. When you lack proper sleep, besides being tired and really grumpy, you can suffer high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels. Both increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Scary isn’t it! Not getting enough sleep can make you very ill or even die! So getting a good night sleep is important to your wellbeing in having a healthy life style. So get a good sleep!
